At present, Petra is working on the abstract, Georg is working on the vouchers and posters, Helmut is doing the controlling, Gerhard is getting the venue in order, Brigitte is getting all the last details for the breaks, lunches, afternoon coffees, and dinner receptions, Andrea is checking the texts and logistics, Rüdiger is finishing the webmaterial, and Stefaan is writing this text...

In your symposium material there will be a text with some suggestions for rules and regulations to smoothen the management of the groups. Please do read this text. There will be 3 groups with coloured badges (red, yellow and green). In addition, for the Sunday evening and Monday morning session only, there will be honorary guests (ambassadors, public servants, relatives, press, diplomats, sponsors, etc.). They will have a blue badge.

Please have a look at the list of antiquarians who will present their material at the venue. They will have something of interest (you might wish to consult their websites).

Weather providing, a group picture will be taken (just outside of the venue), after the first part of the commemorative morning session. Please do take part, it will be the only big group picture.

If you have material from your IMCoS country, which you want to expose, please do take it with you. You can lay out pamphlets and material for others to read.

We are still looking for a volunteer who would write about this IMCoS symposium....

For those who have not responded on our question, what type of maps and globes they collect, please answer this question at the registration desk. There we will also ask you about your menu selection for 3 consecutive days.

Have a safe flight. A few of you are early. Welcome to Vienna. It is a safe and beautiful city, waiting for you to discover.

The IMCoS weekend and the dinner at the East India Club in London gave us the opportunity to make a brief presentation on the preparation for the IMCoS symposium in Vienna. Most participants at the dinner already had registered ... and high hopes were for registrations from Mexico, the Philippines, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Israel, Italy, France ...and other countries.... incl. England and Ireland.

Now, 2 months before the Symposium, 121 participants including the 29 speakers and organisers, from 20 countries have registered. We also have 5 students and youngsters who will be attending this symposium. We thank the Washington Map Collectors Society for their high turn up at this symposium. So if you did not register, you might consider booking now before the Symosium becomes fully booked.

We have secured several international antiquarians who will be showing material (maps, books, etc...) on Wednesday the 12th of September from 08.00 - 12.00. Several of them have made an special catalogue for this event.

Just in time for the international symposium, the new airport terminal in Vienna has opened. Quite a treat.

Remember to wear your registration badge at all events. Apparently, it has happened that a few "unregistered" ones sneak in, but from what we saw in London and other international events, IMCoS is a big family.

We have asked several participants to find out what map and globes they collect. This information is meant to intensify the exchange of information amongst collectors and academics.

In less than 100 days, the 30th international Map Collectors' Symposium in Vienna, Austria will take place. By the end of may, more than 100 participants from 17 countries countries have registered, but there are still some seats available. So if you did not register, you might consider booking now before the Symosium becomes fully booked.

The opening Ceremony will have an important speaker, Archduke Dr. Michael Salvator Habsburg-Lothringen, member of the Habsburg family and historian. In Addition, Dr. Wouter Bracke from the Royal Belgian Library in Brussels has agreed to come to Vienna and hold an opening presentation.

The flower company, the catering companies, the reception halls, the music, the museums, the photographers, the librarians, the antiquarians, the civil cervants, the hotels and transport companies ... all are ready for you to come to Vienna ...

On Sunday, September 9 please assure you come to register as of 18.00 at the Hilton Vienna Hotel am Stadtpark 1, 1030 Vienna (see our map for the location - and please don't confuse it with the Hilton Plaza Hotel or the Hilton Danube Hotel, both also in Vienna!). We invite you for a drink on the first floor and meet with the other participants and honorary guests.

We have been informed that a few hotels are already fully booked. At the Hilton Vienna Hotel, which gave us a special rate, and the König von Ungarn, there are still rooms available.

If you happen to arrive in Vienna prior to the 8th of September, do have a look early in the morning at the Fleamarket, at the Wiener Naschmarkt on Saturday morning - it has happend one did find a rare map ... a rare globe ... a drawing ... a coin or ...

We look forward to see you here in Vienna - have a safe trip

Information to antiquarians

On wednesday, september 12th, from 08.00 to 12.00, we offer (at a small service charge) the opportunity to present antiquarian material (books, maps, atlasses, globes) to the participants of the IMCoS symposium. Several antiquarians already make use of this direct marketing opportunity. Please contact us to register.

Overview

The IMCoS International Symposium in Vienna, Austria, commemorates, amongst other things, the 500th birthday of the Belgian Gerhardus Mercator who was born in Rupelmonde, Flanders (now Belgium). Of course, Mercator is one of the most important 16th century cartographers and globe makers not only for his mapmaking but also for inventing his projection which is still used on maps today.

The symposium will focus on Mercator and the influence he experienced from the age of discoveries together with his place in the Habsburg Empire which flourished at that time. Many of the maps and globes produced during this period were highly prized for economic, military and diplomatic purposes and so were often kept secret. At the same time international relationships, scientific developments, philosophy and religion influenced the globe and map makers and vice versa.

Preliminary Programm subject to change.

The 30th IMCoS International Symposium from the 9th until the 12th of September 2012 in Vienna, Austria, will bring together map and globe collectors, academics, diplomats, historians, geographers, public officers, librarians, dealers and sponsors from all over the world.
